The Distinctive Personality of Dachshund Puppies

Dachshunds are naturally inquisitive, energetic, and deeply devoted to their families. They excel as watchdogs—alerting you to visitors—yet remain gentle and affectionate with household members. Because of their elongated backs and short legs, moderate exercise is essential. Simple daily walks or brief play sessions prevent back strain and keep them mentally stimulated. Additionally, positive-reinforcement training encourages good habits and strengthens the bond between you and your Dachshund Puppy.

At Petland Ohio, our commitment extends far beyond adoption day. We provide individualized nutrition guidance designed to support healthy growth and maintain optimal weight—critical for Dachshunds’ spinal health. Brief history

This dog breed originated from Germany and back then they were referred to as the badger dog. In essence, the ‘Dachs’ in Dachshund stands for badger while the ‘hund’ means dog. This dog breed can be traced to the 15th century and they came in different sizes.

However, in the 18th and 19th centuries ‘Teckel’ as called in Germany was refined and elongated. The purpose of this was to create a dog that could fit into the burrows of a badger and lure him out or kill him.

A lot of years went into this development and in the 1800s people started keeping Dachshunds as pets rather than hunting dogs.

Temperament

This dog breed is clever no doubt. It has a fearless trait as part of its hunting heritage, it is courageous, driven and can display traits of stubbornness. Dachshunds of this generation can be as cute and cuddly with their owners as they’re allowed to be.

This dog breed is very entertaining especially when it chases its tail. However, with the diversity in the color of the coat, the personality of the dachshund differs. The wirehead breed has the terrier in its lineage which could be the source of its mischief.

The longhairs are calmer than the Smooths which have a mix in personality. Dachshunds are naturally bold and fearless hence when getting a puppy, neglect any that displays timidity.

Environment

This petite dog can thrive in an apartment setting. However, they have a low tolerance for cold weather as their fur is thin, but they can handle the heat. Any loving environment where the dachshund will have a good amount of exercise or walks is fine with this breed.

They’re very sensitive breeds and love pleasing its owners. This dog breed is known to develop better in an environment with kids around as they’re very kid-friendly.

Exercise

This dog breed has an average need for exercise. They can be very playful especially around kids and their exercise needs are fair. Any exercise the dachshund partakes in needs to be of average intensity to avoid fatigue.

They are natural hunters, hence they have a great potential for wanderlust and they will follow trails till they probably get missing. In essence, in terms of exercise, walks in the park, playing fetch or testing his perseverance could be great for the dog.

When dachshunds get bored or are left unattended for hours at a stretch, they can eat and destroy anything within their reach.

Grooming

Maintaining this dog breed costs little to nothing. Yes, they do shed but no, not often and not in abundance. Their fur is short and shiny hence it requires regular brushing to keep their appearance. Bathing dachshunds should be done ceremoniously or when they reek of something.

This breed doesn’t have the accompanying doggie smell and their oral hygiene is important as brushing should be done thrice weekly. When winter approaches, your dachshund will need a sweater when outdoors as they don’t do so well when exposed to cold.

One important factor to note is that Dachshunds are also groomed based on their type.

Our Dachshund puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. USDA licensed commercial breeders account for less than 20% of all breeders in the country.

The unregulated breeders who are selling outside of the USDA regulations and without a license are what we consider to be “Puppy Mills.” We are committed to offering Dachshund puppies who will grow up to become important members of your family. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell.

Most Frequently Asked Questions About Dachshunds

1. What is the average life expectancy of Dachshund Puppies?

Dachshund Puppies typically live between 12 and 15 years, with many reaching their early teens in good health. Proper nutrition, routine veterinary care, and moderate exercise all contribute to longevity. Regular check‑ups can help detect issues like intervertebral disk disease early—an important consideration given their long backs—allowing for prompt intervention and improved outcomes.

2. What coat varieties and colors do Dachshund Puppies come in?

Dachshund Puppies are available in three coat types—smooth, long‑haired, and wire‑haired—each offering unique grooming and care considerations. Color options include red, cream, black and tan, chocolate, gray (blue), fawn, tan points, and merle patterns. Some Dachshund Puppies may also feature dapple or piebald markings. When choosing your puppy, consider how a coat type and color will fit your family’s lifestyle and grooming routine.

3. How much exercise do Dachshund Puppies need in Columbus, Ohio?

In Columbus’s temperate climate, Dachshund Puppies benefit from two short walks or play sessions each day—roughly 20 to 30 minutes total. Avoid overexertion on very hot summer afternoons or icy winter mornings; instead, opt for early morning or late afternoon strolls when temperatures are milder. Low‑impact activities like scent games and gentle fetch indoors can also keep them mentally stimulated without straining their spines. By tailoring exercise to seasonal weather, you’ll help your Dachshund Puppy maintain a healthy weight and strong muscles.

4. Are Dachshund Puppies good with children and families?

Dachshund Puppies are known for forming deep bonds and often thrive in family settings. They’re curious and playful but also protective, making them good watchdogs that alert to any visitor. Early socialization—with gentle handling and exposure to children—helps ensure they remain friendly and adaptable. Because of their small size, supervision is key when they interact with younger kids to prevent accidental injury. When introduced properly, Dachshund Puppies become affectionate, loyal family members.

5. What are the grooming needs of Dachshund Puppies?

Grooming requirements vary by coat type:

• Smooth‑Coated Dachshund Puppies: Require minimal brushing—once a week with a soft bristle brush to remove loose hair.

• Long‑Haired Dachshund Puppies: Need brushing 2–3 times a week to prevent mats, particularly around ears and legs.

• Wire‑Haired Dachshund Puppies: Benefit from hand‑stripping or plucking a few times per year to maintain coat texture, along with weekly brushing.

All Dachshund Puppies should have regular nail trims, ear checks (to prevent infections), and dental care. A balanced grooming routine supports healthy skin and a shiny coat.

6. How do I train my Dachshund Puppy effectively?

Dachshund Puppies are intelligent but can be independent or stubborn, so consistent, positive‑reinforcement training works best. Start with basic commands—sit, stay, come—using small treats and praise to reinforce good behavior. Crate training helps with housebreaking and provides a safe space for your puppy. Short, frequent sessions (5–10 minutes) keep them engaged without frustrating them. Socialization—introducing new people, sounds, and environments early—builds confidence and reduces barking tendencies. Patience and consistency are key: Dachshund Puppies respond quickly when training is both fun and structured.

7. Where can I find reputable Dachshund Puppy breeders or rescues in Columbus, Ohio?

In Columbus, Ohio, trusted resources include:

• Benedict Doxies LLC: An AKC‑compliant in‑home breeder focusing on health, temperament, and socialization from day one.

• Freedom Tails Ohio Rescue: A local Dachshund rescue group serving central Ohio, offering opportunities to adopt adult Dachshunds and sometimes puppies.

• Sunrise Pups (Columbus location): Known for small, family‑friendly puppies raised with quality care.

When choosing a breeder, verify USDA licensing and request health clearances for spinal screening (IVDD). If adopting, rescues often perform veterinary checks and temperament assessments before adoption. By working with reputable sources, you ensure your Dachshund Puppy receives the best start in life.
